Student expectations:
At Wallsend, our school wide expectations encourage student achievement. Our school motto is Successful learners show respect, take responsibility and make safe choices.
Student reward system:
Smilies
At Wallsend Public School, we like to acknowledge the efforts that students make to contribute to a positive and engaging learning environment. Teachers do this in all lessons, both verbally and non-verbally. Giving a ‘happy face’ to a child to place on a classroom chart, is a visual representation of their effort.
For continuing to meet our school expectations, students are presented with a smilie. Students can earn smilies in the classroom and on the playground. Once reaching ten smilies, students trade them in for a reward from the win bin or canteen, and they receive a gold Principal’s Smilie Award.
Weekly assembly awards
Every week class teachers present awards linked to our school expectations: learning, respect, responsibility and safety. A smilie trophy is awarded to the class meeting assembly expectations. There is also a trophy given to the class that has the highest percentage of attendance and another trophy for the wearing of school uniform.
Gold Award
To be eligible to receive a gold award, students must collect five awards; one from each of the core expectations (respect, responsibility, safety, learning) plus an additional award from any of the above categories. Students also need to collect two Principal’s smilie awards and meet DoE requirements of at least 90% attendance. If a student becomes eligible for a gold award yet they repeatedly make inappropriate choices, the consequences for their actions may result in them not receiving the gold award.
